Verdun sits on a former floodplain of the St. Lawrence, with a water table higher than in most of the other areas we cover. Many of its duplexes and row houses have a raised ground floor over an English basement, with a sump pump that works hard as soon as the ground is saturated.

The borough has completed a good part of its storm and sanitary sewer separation, which lowers backup risk compared to areas still on a combined system. But the river's proximity and the high water table mean Verdun's basements stay among the most exposed to water infiltration, backwater valve and working sump pump included.
